Young Man Jumps into Yamuna River After Break-Up

A 21-year-old man jumped into the Yamuna River from the DND Flyway late Sunday night while on a video call with his sister. Police said the young man, identified as Rithik, was distressed after a breakup with his girlfriend.

His sister Suman called the police around 11:22 PM and reported that her brother had leapt off the bridge during their conversation. Police and emergency services reached the spot and found a motorcycle and a mobile phone.

Suman, who lives in Karol Bagh, told officers that Rithik had been staying with her for several months while searching for work after losing his job. She said he was struggling after a recent breakup. On the night of the incident, the siblings argued. Before jumping, Rithik told her, “Meri girlfriend ne break-up kar liya hai. Woh meri baat nahi maan rahi” (“My girlfriend has broken up with me. She is not listening to what I’m saying”).

Authorities launched a rescue operation soon after the call. Police alerted the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). A motorboat team searched the river, while the Delhi Fire Service deployed a fire tender. The Delhi Disaster Management Authority also joined the effort. The Sunlight Colony police station registered a missing person complaint.

The DND Flyway, which connects Delhi and Noida, is a busy route known for heavy traffic. Incidents at this location highlight the urgent need for greater awareness of mental health struggles. In 2022, Delhi recorded the highest suicide rate among major Indian cities.

Mental health experts stress the importance of strong support systems. They urge people in emotional distress to talk to family, friends, or professionals. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, discussions about mental well-being have become more open, reflecting a slow but steady shift.

As the search for Rithik continues, authorities and health advocates remind the public that no one has to face despair alone. Recognizing the signs of distress and seeking timely help can prevent tragedies and offer a path toward recovery.
