In a shocking case from Faridabad, a young man arrested for fraudulent marriages has exposed a dangerous pattern of deception. Police arrested 29-year-old Somdutt Kaushik for tricking women into marrying him by pretending to be a senior government officer. He used multiple fake names on matrimonial websites to target women.
Kaushik, a resident of Jurhera village in Chhainsa, was caught at his home on Tuesday. A Faridabad court placed him on a three-day police remand for further questioning on Wednesday. Inspector Prehlad Singh, SHO of Surajkund police station, said Kaushik married more than 19 women in states like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, and Madhya Pradesh over the last six years. So far, three victims have filed FIRs against him in Faridabad, Noida, and Ghaziabad.
One of the victims, a 24-year-old woman from Green Field Colony, explained how Kaushik trapped her. He created a profile under the false name “Rakshit Sharma” in 2022 and claimed he worked as a GST inspector with the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs. After gaining her trust, he married her in December 2024. Her family spent about ₹25 lakh on the wedding, including ₹15 lakh on a new car. Kaushik even brought people posing as his relatives to make the marriage appear real.
Inspector Singh revealed that Kaushik struggled with a gambling addiction. After the wedding, he used most of the money on gambling and never took his wife to his home. Suspicious, the woman checked his phone and discovered photos and chats with many other women. She then realized he had married several women and reported him to the police.
Police first booked Kaushik for cheating and forgery in March. Although he got bail two months ago, new evidence led to a reinvestigation. This time, police also charged him with rape. Investigators confirmed that he had been running this scam for at least five years. Many victims stayed silent due to fear of judgment and social pressure.
The investigation now focuses on possible involvement of Kaushik’s family. Officers are also checking whether he paid people to pretend to be his relatives while approaching potential brides. These findings will help uncover the full scope of his crimes.
