Prime Minister Narendra Modi returned to New Delhi on November 12 after a two-day visit to Bhutan. The trip marked another milestone in India-Bhutan relations. PM Modi’s visit to Bhutan strengthens the deep friendship between the two countries through new agreements in energy, healthcare, and connectivity. The visit also celebrated Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual traditions.

Before leaving Bhutan, PM Modi thanked the people and government for their warm hospitality. On X, he wrote, “My visit to Bhutan has taken place when the people of this nation are marking various landmark programmes. It is the 70th Birth Anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo; the Global Peace Prayer Festival is ongoing, and special Buddha relics from India are here.” He added that these new partnerships would help strengthen cooperation in hydropower, healthcare, and infrastructure.

A touching moment came when King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck personally came to the airport to bid farewell to PM Modi. The Prime Minister said, “I am thankful to His Majesty the King of Bhutan for coming to the airport as I board for Delhi.” The gesture reflected the warm and respectful bond between both nations.

During the visit, PM Modi met the King of Bhutan, the Fourth Druk Gyalpo Jigme Singye Wangchuck, and Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. They discussed cooperation in energy, trade, technology, connectivity, and culture. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to peace, stability, and prosperity in the region.

PM Modi’s participation in the 70th birth anniversary celebration of the Fourth Druk Gyalpo. He joined the royal family at the Kalachakra ‘Wheel of Time’ empowerment ceremony held at the Changlimithang Stadium in Thimphu. The event was part of the Global Peace Prayer Festival, which drew over 30,000 attendees, including visitors from other countries. Bhutan’s Chief Abbot, His Holiness the Je Khenpo, led the prayers promoting global peace and harmony.

Another key achievement was the joint inauguration of the 1,020 MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project. This project marks a major step forward in India-Bhutan energy cooperation. It will help meet rising power demands, promote clean energy, and create jobs for local workers. The project also ensures a steady and long-term energy partnership between the two countries.

Both governments also launched new projects in renewable energy, healthcare, and cross-border connectivity. PM Modi reaffirmed India’s full support for Bhutan’s 13th Five Year Plan, which focuses on sustainable growth. The plan includes the development of the Gelephu Mindfulness City, designed to promote wellness, sustainability, and economic opportunity.

The leaders also discussed expanding cooperation in space technology, digital payments, and education. Bhutan’s focus on digital transformation and India’s technological expertise will create new opportunities for students, entrepreneurs, and innovators in both nations.

India and Bhutan share a relationship built on trust, mutual respect, and shared cultural values. Indian leaders often take part in Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual ceremonies, showing the emotional depth of this bond.
