Plans to Upgrade the 22 Km Mehrauli-Badarpur Road in Delhi

Plans to upgrade the 22 Km Mehrauli-Badarpur road are moving forward as the Delhi government prepares a major infrastructure project worth ₹387 crores. The initiative aims to transform one of South Delhi’s busiest stretches, improving travel conditions and reducing daily congestion for thousands of commuters. The decision follows a meeting involving the Chief Minister and the Public Works Department (PWD).

Any public project with a budget of ₹100 crores or more requires approval from the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC). Officials explained that once they receive financial clearance, they will invite construction companies to submit tenders. This will allow work on the road overhaul to begin.

The Mehrauli-Badarpur Road is a lifeline for people living in areas such as Saket, Chhatarpur, Sainik Farms, and Mehrauli. It also serves as a major link to Gurgaon, a crucial hub in the National Capital Region. However, commuters regularly face challenges due to poor road conditions, uneven surfaces, and frequent traffic jams. The situation becomes worse during the monsoon, when waterlogging creates severe travel delays.

Officials pointed out that the new Metro corridor has added to the road’s congestion. In several spots, the road width varies, narrowing due to encroachments, which slow down vehicles and create bottlenecks. To fix this, PWD engineers are planning a complete redesign to ensure smoother traffic flow and safer travel.

The upgrade plan includes constructing a 2.42-kilometer elevated corridor or underpass between the Asian Market near Pushp Vihar and Batra Hospital. This section will help bypass one of the most traffic-prone areas. Another key feature is an underpass at Saket-G Block Metro Station, part of the Delhi Metro Phase IV project, which will improve connectivity for thousands of daily passengers.

Saket, near Select City Mall, is one of the worst traffic hotspots due to narrow roads and commercial encroachments. The redesign will ease travel between Saket, Chhatarpur, Pushp Vihar, Vasant Kunj, and Gurgaon. Additionally, the plan includes a 2.4-kilometer elevated stretch from Maa Anandmayee Marg to Tughlakabad railway crossing and a 0.44-kilometer ramp connecting Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg with the Mehrauli-Badarpur Road.

Drainage improvement is another crucial part of the project. Authorities plan to upgrade systems at frequently waterlogged points like the Zakhira underpass, Rohtak Road, and Karala-Kanjhawala Road. Since Delhi receives heavy rainfall every year, better drainage will significantly reduce flooding and related traffic disruptions.

Officials believe this project will not only reduce congestion but also improve road safety, decrease travel time, and support economic activity. Better road infrastructure can boost business connectivity, improve emergency response times, and enhance the daily commuting experience for residents.

In conclusion, Plans to upgrade the 22 Km Mehrauli-Badarpur road represent a major step toward improving South Delhi’s infrastructure. With better road alignment, new underpasses, upgraded drainage, and expanded capacity. And this project promises safer, faster, and more reliable travel for millions of residents and commuters.
