New Monitoring System to Improve Safety on Delhi-Gurgaon

New Monitoring System to Improve Safety on Delhi-Gurgaon

Gurgaon has reported a worrying rise in road accidents this year. On the Delhi-Gurgaon Expressway (NH8) alone, 113 accidents have already taken place in 2023. These crashes killed 68 people and injured 102 others. Therefore, the high toll shows the urgent need for better road safety and stronger traffic management.

One key cause is the delay in alerting police about stalled or parked vehicles. When drivers leave vehicles on the road, they block traffic and trigger collisions. To address this problem, Gurgaon traffic police launched a system that immediately tracks stationary vehicles.

The system alerts officers if any vehicle stands still for more than five seconds. A special monitoring cell inside the Sector 28 traffic tower handles these alerts. Two trained officers use advanced software to follow traffic closely and respond at once. As a result, stalled vehicles get cleared before they cause chaos.

Every day, more than 300,000 vehicles use the expressway. With such heavy volume, even short delays can lead to jams. Consequently, once the monitoring cell detects a stalled vehicle, officers alert zonal teams, who act quickly to clear the road. If drivers park illegally, they face instant violation tickets.

Several points along NH8 see frequent congestion. These include Shankar Chowk, Iffco Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, and Panchgaon. According to DCP (Traffic) Rajesh Mohan, the police are using technical analysis to decongest these “red spots.” In addition, data from the control room helps the teams act in real time to prevent jams.

The new approach proved successful during the Kanwar Yatra. Police diverted thousands of pilgrims to internal roads, easing pressure on NH8. Most importantly, the event recorded zero fatalities or law-and-order issues. To make this diversion possible, authorities repaired damaged stretches near the Rajokri-Sarhaul border and Dhanchari camp.

The plan worked. Pedestrians walked safely after the roads were cleaned. Moreover, pilgrims used service roads and underpasses near Ambience Mall and key chowks, avoiding major disruptions.

Encouraged by this, police now plan to maintain the Dhanchari camp road regularly. This way, pedestrians can remain safe while vehicles move freely on the expressway.

With real-time monitoring, strict enforcement, and better road conditions, Gurgaon traffic police aim to cut accidents and congestion. Ultimately, their goal is clear: safer, smoother journeys for everyone on NH8.
