Men Assaulted by Bouncers After Standing Up for Dhol Player

Early on Sunday, an incident at a bar in Connaught Place, New Delhi left three men injured after they were allegedly assaulted by the bouncers. The attack took place around 1:15 AM and involved two lawyers—Dharmendra Kumar, 36, and Naveen Kumar, 31—along with their friend, 28-year-old Naveen Shaukin.

According to reports, the trio had just finished dinner and drinks at a restaurant and stepped outside for a smoke. While outside, they paid a dhol player to entertain them. Dhol music, deeply rooted in Punjabi culture, is a familiar presence at weddings, festivals, and community celebrations.

As the friends enjoyed the performance, a bouncer from the bar confronted them, shouting at the dhol player and demanding he leave the area. Dharmendra Kumar objected to the bouncer’s actions and tried to stop him from pushing the musician away. The bouncer then summoned other staff members, who allegedly held the men down and assaulted them.

The victims were later taken to Lady Hardinge Hospital, where they received medical treatment for their injuries. Police confirmed that a case has been registered and that charges include causing hurt, wrongful restraint, criminal intimidation, and other legal provisions. Investigators are reviewing CCTV footage from the bar to determine the sequence of events and the role of the staff and management.

The incident has sparked concern as the men had only sought to enjoy live music and support a local musician. Instead, they were met with violence. Authorities stress that the investigation is ongoing and justice will be pursued.

The case also underscores the significance of dhol players in Indian cultural life. Punjab, known for its rich traditions, has thousands of registered dhol performers, and the music continues to bring vibrancy to gatherings across the region. As Chandigarh and surrounding areas expand their nightlife offerings, advocates stress the need to ensure both cultural appreciation and public safety.

For Dharmendra Kumar, Naveen Kumar, and Naveen Shaukin, what should have been a lighthearted moment turned into a night of aggression and injury. The police say they remain committed to bringing accountability as the probe moves forward.
