Man Arrested for Posing as MCG Employee to Extort Money from Contractor

A man arrested for posing as MCG employee after he allegedly tried to extort money from a contractor clearing debris behind KV School in Sector 14, Gurgaon. The accused, Hitesh Khatri, aged 35 and a resident of New Colony Extension, approached a tractor-trolley driver on November 21 along with an accomplice who is still on the run. Since they claimed to be officials from the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG), the incident has raised fresh concerns about fake officials and public safety.

The driver was clearing construction waste when the two men stopped him between 5 and 6 PM. They demanded to see a license for debris lifting and threatened him with a heavy challan if he failed to provide it. The threats frightened the driver, so he immediately called the contractor for help.

When the contractor reached the spot, he found the accused threatening the driver and demanding ₹10,000 to “settle the issue.” Realizing it was an extortion attempt, he quickly lodged a written complaint. Because of his swift action, police arrested Khatri the very next day. Officers registered an FIR under multiple sections, including IPC sections 204 and 308(2).

On Sunday, police presented Khatri in court, where a judge sent him to judicial custody. Meanwhile, officers are searching for his associate, who reportedly works on “DC rates” and has links to MCG operations. During questioning, Khatri mentioned that he is taking a tattoo designing course and admitted that his partner helped plan the extortion attempt.

This case highlights a serious issue. Impersonation of government staff is becoming more common, especially in public work areas. The Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon manages waste disposal and construction debris. Because of this, citizens must stay cautious and check identities when someone claims to be an official.

Authorities also urge people to look at ID cards and ask for proper documents. They warn everyone not to pay money to anyone who makes sudden demands. The MCG follows a clear protocol for contractors, drivers, and workers. Only authorized staff members can issue challans.

Police have increased awareness drives to help people spot scams. They ask the public to report any suspicious activity right away. Quick reporting helps prevent fraud. Strong community awareness also plays an important role in reducing such crimes.

This incident shows the need for better monitoring in places where public contractors work. If local agencies stay alert and residents cooperate, they can reduce extortion attempts. This teamwork also helps strengthen public trust in civic systems.

In conclusion, a man arrested for posing as MCG employee serves as a strong warning to those who misuse authority for personal gain. With continued awareness and cooperation between citizens and police, Gurgaon can stay safer and better protected from fraud.
