Gurgaon woman arrested in a shocking case for sending death threats to herself and her husband using a fake Instagram account. The cybercrime police uncovered the truth after investigating her complaint, which initially claimed that an unknown woman was threatening the couple.
The accused, Priya Mishra, lives in a Sohna housing society. On May 29, she reported to the cybercrime police station that she and her husband had been receiving repeated death threats online. A special team led by Inspector Naveen Kumar, under the supervision of ACP Priyanshu Diwan, began probing the case.
During interrogation, Priya admitted she created the fake account herself. She confessed that ongoing marital problems pushed her to carry out this act. She not only sent the threats but also falsely reported them to police in an attempt to frame the situation. Officials recovered the mobile phone she used, and further investigation is in progress.
This case fits into a larger pattern of Cybercrime in Gurgaon. Between January and May 2023, cyber police arrested 52 people, including one minor, for various online frauds totaling Rs 61.65 crore. Out of these, 28 cases originated in Haryana, while 502 cases were registered nationwide. The police resolved over 12,000 complaints during this period.
Common scams included fake profiles, sextortion, fraudulent investments, impersonation of officials, and FedEx scams. These methods show how cybercriminals exploit social media and financial systems to mislead victims. Police operations also led to the recovery of 26 phones, five laptops, SIM cards, ATM cards, chequebooks, and Rs 15.36 lakh in cash. The Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) examined these devices to expose the extent of fraud networks.
Authorities emphasize the importance of public awareness and encourage residents to report suspicious activities. Community vigilance, combined with proactive policing, remains essential to curb the rise of cybercrime.
The case of Priya Mishra highlights how even personal conflicts can spill into illegal activities online. Gurgaon woman arrested for staging death threats serves as a reminder of the growing complexity of cybercrime. And the need for people to stay cautious, informed, and alert in their digital interactions.
