Nepal is witnessing violent protests and political turmoil, and in this chaos, a Ghaziabad woman dies in Kathmandu amid protests. On September 7, Ramveer Singh Gola, 58, and his wife, Rajesh Devi, 55, traveled to Kathmandu to visit the sacred Pashupatinath temple. However, on the night of September 9, rioters set fire to their hotel. Ramveer managed to escape with minor injuries, but Rajesh sustained severe spinal injuries after falling while trying to escape. She was hospitalized but succumbed to her injuries on September 10.
Their son Vishal recounted the harrowing night. He said that just hours before the attack, his parents video-called the family to show them Kathmandu’s sights. When chaos erupted, Ramveer broke a window, tied bedsheets together, and jumped to safety. Rajesh, however, slipped while climbing down and fell on her back. Vishal also expressed anger at the Indian Embassy, saying their support was minimal and rescue efforts came very late.
The Indian Embassy has since advised citizens in Nepal to reach out through its helpdesk at [email protected] if they face difficulties.
Meanwhile, Nepal’s Gen-Z youth are emerging as a powerful voice in the protests. They have nominated former Chief Justice Karki as interim Prime Minister, calling her a symbol of honesty and independence. Kathmandu’s Mayor Balen, a popular youth leader, has extended his support to her candidacy, further strengthening the youth movement against corruption.
The unrest has taken a heavy toll. Police spokesperson Binod Ghimire confirmed that the death toll has reached 51, including 21 protesters, 9 prisoners, 3 police officers, and 18 others. The protests started over deep frustration with corruption and political stagnation, but have now spiraled into widespread violence.
