On September 1, Ghaziabad Police arrested four men linked to a car theft gang. The suspects were Mohammad Chand, Sufiyan, Uves, and Brijmohan alias BM. Police caught them in Loni and recovered seven stolen cars, fake number plates, and electronic devices used in theft.
During questioning, the gang admitted stealing between 50 and 60 cars. They sold these vehicles in Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. This confession exposed the wide interstate reach of the racket.
Investigators found that a head constable played a central role. He sent car details on WhatsApp, instructed the gang which vehicles to steal, and guided them on parking spots. After the theft, he used his connections to deliver the cars to buyers. Police officials said he worked like the main operator, activating the gang when demands came from outside.
The case surfaced when police probed a Brezza theft from Ghaziabad’s Link Road. Officers checked footage from more than 300 CCTV cameras over a 25-kilometer stretch. Their efforts led them to the stolen vehicle. Additional Commissioner of Police Alok Priyadarshi confirmed the constable’s suspension and said his past postings are also under review.
The issue extends beyond Ghaziabad. Punjab has reported a sharp rise in car thefts, especially in Mohali and Chandigarh. NCRB data shows cases rising steadily between 2019 and 2022. Punjab’s location near Delhi and Haryana makes it easy for gangs to shift stolen cars across borders.
