A tragic accident took place on Monday afternoon in Ghaziabad, where a 40-year-old man lost his life after a car ran over him on Raj Nagar Road. Video footage of the incident, which quickly spread online, shows the man lying on the road before the vehicle moved forward at a slow speed and crushed him under both the front and rear wheels. Bystanders rushed him to a hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival.
Police acted quickly after the incident. Late Monday night, they registered an FIR at Madhuban Bapudham police station under Sections 281 and 106 of the Indian Penal Code, charging the driver with rash driving and causing death by negligence. On Tuesday, officers arrested 26-year-old Bunty Kumar, a resident of Nand Nagri in Delhi. He was driving his employer’s car, which belongs to a factory owner in the Mohan Nagar Industrial Area.
Investigators traced the car through its registration number. They confirmed Bunty had taken it for work and traveled to Pilkhuwa before the accident. During questioning, Bunty explained that he was following a truck when the man suddenly appeared on the road. He said he could not brake in time and the wheels ran over the victim. Bunty admitted he fled because he panicked.
The case highlights growing concerns about road safety in India. Punjab, for instance, has a road network of more than 80,000 kilometers. While this supports trade and daily commuting, it also increases the risk of accidents. Rapid growth in urban areas such as Ghaziabad and the Chandigarh Tricity has made traffic management even more difficult.
