Robbery Case in West Delhi
On Tuesday, the Delhi Police caught four men pretending to be godmen. Fake godmen rob women of their jewelry while traveling in moving cabs. This incident took place near the Shadipur flyover and the surrounding areas in West Delhi.
How They Operated
The robbers usually worked in the evenings and at night. They approached vehicles, asking for alms as part of their supposed spiritual needs. Most women thought they were real godmen and wanted to help.
Breakthrough in the Case
The police made the arrests after a woman reported a robbery. This incident happened last Friday. She was traveling from Connaught Place to Moti Nagar in a cab. Near Shadipur flyover, the men knocked on her window and asked for money. The complainant thought they needed help. She offered them ₹200. As she rolled down the window, they grabbed her hand and snatched her diamond and gold rings.
“They knocked on the complainant’s side window and begged for money. The complainant thought they were godmen and decided to pay ₹200. As she rolled down the window, the accused held her hand and snatched her diamond and gold rings,” said Vichitra Veer, the deputy commissioner of police (West).
The Fake Godmen’s Appearance
The robbers dressed in saffron and white clothing. They even smeared ash on their heads to look like real godmen. This helped them to blend in and deceive their victims.
The Arrests
CCTV cameras captured the men running away after the robbery. They fled on foot and then took an auto-rickshaw. The police traced the auto to a man named Vinod Kamat, 50. He was arrested near the Ashoka Park Metro Station. Kamat led the police to JJ Colony, which is near Punjabi Bagh.
Identifying the Gang Members
During the investigation, police identified the other gang members:
- Kabir Nath, 19
- Birju Nath, 45 (Kabir’s father)
- Gurcharan Singh, 57
Kamat provided the vehicle for these criminals. Birju Nath and his son, Kabir, carried out the actual thefts. Gurcharan Singh is accused of buying a stolen gold ring for ₹26,000. He even melted it down. Singh was caught at a jeweler’s shop in GTB Nagar.
Recoveries and Further Investigation
Police have found pieces of the stolen diamond ring. They are also searching for Birju’s brother, who is currently missing. Authorities believe that this gang may be involved in other crimes as well. They are working hard to find the missing brother and gather more evidence against the gang.
The Impact of Such Crimes
This incident raises awareness about the dangers women face while traveling alone. It is important to be cautious, especially at night. Public transport is generally safe, but scams can happen. Women should always be alert and trust their instincts. If something feels wrong, it is better to avoid the situation.
