Delhi Police Arrest Sisters-in-Law for Drug Dealing, Seize Narcotics

Last week, Delhi Police arrested two sisters-in-law, Seema, 54, and Samita, 43, for allegedly dealing in drugs. Officers caught them in North East Delhi while they were delivering narcotics. Police seized 1.049 kilograms of heroin, worth over ₹5 crore in the international market.

The arrests came under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan (NMBA), a nationwide campaign launched in 2020 to make India drug-free. Acting on a tip-off, the Anti-Narcotics Task Force (ANTF) of the Crime Branch intercepted the women near GTB Hospital on Friday. They were riding a blue Scooty Activa when police stopped them. Along with the heroin, police recovered ₹22,900 in cash, two mobile phones, and the scooter.

India continues to struggle with widespread drug abuse, with Punjab among the worst-affected states. Studies show that nearly 25 percent of Punjab’s youth face addiction, a rate much higher than the national average. Chandigarh, home to a large student population, also faces higher risks. Families in these regions have suffered deeply from the ongoing drug crisis.

The NMBA has identified Punjab as a priority state for intervention. The campaign focuses on raising awareness, offering treatment, and building community support. It encourages young people to stay away from drugs and promotes healthier lifestyles.

Local organizations and authorities are working together to hold workshops and awareness drives. These programs aim to educate families and youth about the dangers of drugs. Experts stress that parents must talk openly with their children and watch for early signs of addiction.

The arrests of Seema and Samita show the scale of the fight against drug trafficking in Delhi. Police emphasize that law enforcement alone cannot solve the issue. Community awareness and family involvement remain critical in creating a drug-free society.
