A tragic incident in Delhi has raised alarm over dowry-related crimes, and the details continue to disturb many. A 22-year-old woman, Komal, also known as Varsha, died under suspicious circumstances just four months after her marriage. She was two months pregnant at the time of her death. Komal lived with her husband, Aman, in the Dwarka area of Delhi, and the two married on April 16 this year.
Her family claims she was a victim of dowry harassment. According to her father, Dinesh, Aman and his family repeatedly demanded money and valuables. Moreover, Komal told her parents that she suffered regular beatings. On August 21, Dinesh received a call from Aman, who said that Komal was unconscious in the hospital. Sadly, doctors pronounced her dead soon after. Because of these circumstances, Dinesh immediately suspected foul play and accused his daughter’s in-laws of abuse and mistreatment.
Two days later, on August 23, police registered an FIR under the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961. Since then, authorities have been investigating the matter. They are questioning family members and neighbors in an effort to uncover the truth. A senior police officer emphasized that the case carries “utmost seriousness” and promised action based on the evidence. However, officers have not made any arrests yet, which continues to worry Komal’s family.
Komal’s death highlights the persistent problem of dowry harassment in India. Although the practice is banned by law, thousands of women lose their lives every year in dowry-related incidents, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). For instance, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh report particularly high numbers of such cases. In addition, shocking crimes have occurred in Greater Noida, where, in one instance, a woman’s in-laws set her on fire in front of her young child.
Dowry-related abuse continues to affect both rural and urban communities. Victims often remain silent, fearing that speaking up may worsen their situation.
