Virat Kohli Set to Play Vijay Hazare Trophy for Delhi Report

Batting superstar Virat Kohli is reportedly set to feature for Delhi in the upcoming Vijay Hazare Trophy. The 2025-26 edition of India’s premier domestic 50-over tournament will run from December 24 to January 18. According to reports from the Times of India, Kohli plans to participate in several matches for Delhi after completing the three-match ODI series against South Africa on December 6. Meanwhile, the BCCI has been pushing both Kohli and Rohit Sharma to play domestic cricket as preparation for the 2027 ODI World Cup.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India reportedly wants senior players to maintain match fitness through domestic tournaments. Both Kohli and Rohit have retired from T20I and Test cricket, making them one-format players. Consequently, the lack of regular match practice has become a concern for selectors and team management. Furthermore, the BCCI has stipulated that non-appearance in domestic tournaments could impact their selection for World Cup preparations.

However, Kohli has pushed back subtly against this pressure. After scoring a magnificent 135 runs in the first ODI against South Africa in Ranchi on Sunday. And he made his stance clear during the post-match presentation. He stated, “I’ve never been a big believer in a lot of preparation. All my cricket has been mental. As long as I feel good mentally, I can play the game.” This comment appeared to be a direct response to the BCCI’s domestic cricket mandate.

The veteran batsman further explained his approach to staying match-ready. “I work physically very hard every day of my life. It’s got nothing to do with cricket anymore. It’s the way I live. So as long as my fitness levels are up and my mental enjoyment and sharpness are there, I know it’s fine,” Kohli added. His century in Ranchi was his 52nd in ODI cricket. And his first since February, strengthening his position as the all-time century record holder in the format.

Kohli also emphasized his extensive experience in international cricket. “I’ve played 300-odd ODI games and so much cricket over the last 15-16 years. If you can bat an hour and a half, two hours in the nets without taking a break, you’re meeting all the markers,” he explained. Additionally, he demonstrated sharp reflexes and quick running between wickets during his innings, proving he can still compete with younger players.

According to the latest reports, Kohli will return to London after the South Africa series concludes. Subsequently, he will link up with the Delhi squad in Bengaluru for a few matches before rejoining the Indian squad for the home series against New Zealand starting January 11. Nevertheless, the Delhi and District Cricket Association (DDCA) has not yet officially confirmed his availability.

Similarly, Rohit Sharma is likely to turn up for Mumbai in the tournament. Both senior cricketers aim to stay prepared for the 2027 ODI World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. By then, Kohli will be 39 and Rohit will be 40 years old.

The Vijay Hazare Trophy participation would allow both veterans to maintain competitive sharpness while addressing BCCI’s concerns about their limited match practice heading into the quadrennial event.
