Pune is expanding rapidly, and so is its traffic. To manage this growing congestion, the Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (Maha-Metro) has launched the New Double-Decker Flyover Project on Paud. This project will connect Kothrud Depot to Chandni Chowk and aims to make travel easier and faster for thousands of commuters.
Double-decker flyovers have two levels. The upper level will serve regular vehicle traffic, while the lower one will carry metro trains. This smart design saves space and helps reduce traffic jams. A similar flyover near Nal Stop and Savitribai Phule Pune University Chowk (SSPU) has already improved traffic movement, proving that the model works.
Maha-Metro has announced a clear timeline for this new project. It invited bids on October 18, organized a pre-bid meeting on October 28, and will open bids on November 26. So far, engineers have completed 700 meters of the metro line, and they still need to finish 1.123 kilometers.
Atul Gadgil, Director (Works) of Maha-Metro, said, “We are ready to begin construction soon.” He explained that Paud Road offers enough open space for the new flyover, unlike the Nal Stop stretch, which struggled with limited land. Because of that, the construction team expects faster progress this time.
The upcoming flyover will include a 1.123 km elevated metro viaduct with two major metro stations, one at Chandni Chowk and another at Kothrud Bus Depot. This link will make it easier for passengers to switch between metro trains, buses, and other transport modes.
Maha-Metro will fund the construction initially, and the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will provide extra financial help if needed. Their teamwork shows strong coordination and commitment to improving city transport.
Gadgil also shared plans for another double-decker flyover between Wagholi and Ramwadi, in partnership with the Maharashtra State Infrastructure Development Corporation (MSIDC). They plan to start that project soon, but for now, the main focus remains on the Paud Road route.
In addition, officials are planning an elevated corridor from Pune to Shirur. This route will run through Ramwadi, Wagholi, and Vitthalwadi and will also use a double-decker structure. Funding for this corridor will come jointly from MSIDC and Maha-Metro.
When completed, these projects will strengthen Pune’s metro network. The extended Pune Metro Line 2 will stretch 28.45 kilometers and include 29 stations, offering better connectivity across the city. This will likely motivate more people to choose public transport over private vehicles, reducing road traffic and pollution.
As Pune continues to grow, these infrastructure upgrades will shape a modern and sustainable city. With fewer cars, cleaner air, and better mobility, the New Double-Decker Flyover Project on Paud marks an important step toward an efficient and eco-friendly Pune.
