On September 17, 2023, the government launched the PM Vishwakarma Scheme, and since then, 30 lakh join PM Vishwakarma Scheme, directly benefiting artisans and craftsmen across India. The scheme has already boosted their businesses with loans worth Rs 41,188 crore, while authorities approved 4.7 lakh loans so far.
The initiative mainly aims to uplift traditional craftsmen by sharpening their skills and linking them with modern markets. Around 26 lakh artisans completed the skill verification process, and 86 percent of them also finished basic training.
The most common trade under the scheme is Raajmistri (mason), showing how vital this skill remains in today’s workforce. To further support workers, the government issued more than 23 lakh e-vouchers to help them purchase essential tools and equipment.
The scheme carries a budget of Rs 13,000 crores, spanning from 2023-24 to 2027-28. Launched on Vishwakarma Day, it reflects the government’s strong commitment to preserving traditional crafts and empowering artisans.
Officials have given special attention to women, Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, and specially-abled individuals. By targeting both urban and rural areas, the scheme ensures broader inclusivity.
To implement the scheme effectively, the government set up District Project Management Units (DPMUs) across India. By July 2025, 497 DPMUs operated in 618 districts, guiding artisans about training, maintaining quality, and spreading awareness about the scheme’s benefits.
The program focuses on key goals: recognizing artisans as vital contributors to the economy, offering modern tools, providing loans without collateral, promoting digital payments, and helping artisans build stronger market connections.
In regions like Punjab, Mohali, and Chandigarh, artisans stand to gain significant benefits. These areas, rich in cultural diversity, can now access financial backing and wider markets.
This initiative does more than provide financial aid. It strengthens traditional knowledge, preserves ancient crafts, and opens opportunities for artisans to succeed in modern times.
