The motorcycle was ridden by Navjot Singh, 52, and his wife, Sandeep Kaur. They lived in Hari Nagar, West Delhi. Navjot worked as a deputy secretary at the Union Ministry of Finance. The devastating accident occurred at Dhaula Kuan, one of Delhi’s busiest intersections.
According to Gulfam, the SUV was driven by 38-year-old Gaganpreet Makkad from Gurugram. He recalled, “I thought the woman who came and sat in the passenger seat had come to help them. I didn’t know she was the one whose car had hit them.”
The BMW struck the divider, overturned, and rammed into the couple’s motorcycle. Navjot Singh suffered fatal injuries, while his wife survived and is still receiving treatment.
Gulfam immediately parked his van and ran to help. Unlike bystanders who recorded videos, he acted. With the help of another man, he carried Singh and then Sandeep into his van. His quick response gave the injured couple a chance.
During the chaos, a woman sat in the front seat of Gulfam’s van. Believing she was helping, he followed her instructions. She borrowed his phone, made urgent calls, and even directed him toward a hospital. Gulfam recalled, “She asked me to go to GTB Nagar. The roads were empty, so I drove fast. It took about half an hour.”
When they arrived, hospital staff were already waiting. Stretchers and doctors were prepared in advance. Sadly, 30 minutes later, doctors declared Navjot Singh dead. Gulfam felt shocked as he realized the woman guiding him was in fact the BMW driver. “I had no idea. I was just doing what she told me,” he explained.
This case highlights India’s urgent road safety concerns. Punjab, for instance, reported 8.4 deaths per 100,000 people in 2021. Despite progress in literacy and cleanliness in cities like Chandigarh, reckless driving remains a major threat.
