Delhi-NCR Faces Heavy Rain: IMD Issues Red Alert

Heavy rainfall hit Delhi-NCR from Friday night into Saturday morning. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a red alert early Saturday, first at 6:20 AM and again at 7:00 AM.

IMD officials said light to moderate showers would continue for the next two hours. They warned of intense spells in eastern and central Delhi. Thunderstorms and winds of 30–40 km/h could affect the entire NCR region, including Meham, Sonipat, Rohtak, and Bhiwari.

The rain began late Friday. IMD first gave a yellow alert, then raised it to orange at 5:30 AM before upgrading to red. By 8:30 AM Saturday, Safdarjung had received 78.7 mm of rain in 24 hours. Pragati Maidan saw 100.3 mm, Lodhi Road 80.7 mm, and Pusa 69 mm.

Officials warned of waterlogging, traffic jams, and poor visibility. Travel times could rise by up to 30 minutes. They advised people to avoid weak structures and remain cautious.

Heavy rain also drenched Punjab, which has recently suffered flash floods. The spread of rain highlighted the wider impact of the weather system.

For the week ahead, IMD has not issued new alerts. It forecast light rain and thunderstorms for the next six days. On August 13, light to moderate rain is likely, followed by thunderstorms on the morning of August 14. On Independence Day, skies may remain partly cloudy with a chance of light showers. Temperatures will range between 22 and 33 degrees Celsius, lower than the usual 26–34 degrees for this time of year.

So far in August, Delhi has recorded 118 mm of rainfall. The monthly average stands at 233.1 mm, so the city is on track for a wetter-than-normal August. In July, Mumbai logged 259.3 mm of rain, higher than its normal 209.7 mm.

The downpour showed how sudden weather shifts can disrupt city life. Heavy rain slows traffic, floods streets, and risks lives. With regular alerts, IMD aims to help residents stay safe during such events.
