Fake godmen rob women in West Delhi, where four men disguised as holy men were caught by Delhi Police near Shadipur flyover and nearby areas. They targeted women traveling in cabs, stealing jewelry by pretending to seek alms. The arrests happened on Tuesday after weeks of late-evening and night crimes.
The breakthrough came when a woman reported a robbery last Friday. She was traveling from Connaught Place to Moti Nagar in a cab when the men knocked on her window, asking for money. Believing them to be genuine, she offered ₹200. As she rolled down the window, they grabbed her hand and snatched her diamond and gold rings. Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Vichitra Veer confirmed the details of the case.
The gang created convincing appearances by wearing saffron and white robes and smearing ash on their heads. This disguise made them look authentic, tricking unsuspecting passengers. CCTV footage later showed them fleeing the scene, first on foot and then by auto-rickshaw.
Police traced the vehicle to 50-year-old Vinod Kamat, who was arrested near Ashoka Park Metro Station. His confession led investigators to JJ Colony near Punjabi Bagh, where more details emerged. Police identified the other gang members as Kabir Nath, 19, his father Birju Nath, 45, and Gurcharan Singh, 57.
According to the police, Birju and Kabir carried out the thefts, while Kamat provided the vehicle. Gurcharan Singh bought one of the stolen gold rings for ₹26,000 and melted it down at a jeweler’s shop in GTB Nagar. Officers recovered fragments of a diamond ring and continue searching for Birju’s missing brother, suspected of involvement in other crimes.
